WEEK 8 – STUCK IN BROADWATER, CRUTCHES AND ALL 😊

T’was the perfect day to kiteboard. 8 weeks after we started our Big Lap. Roughly around middle of March. We were staying in Broadwater Tourist Park in Gold Coast. We chose that park so we could launch our kites straight off the park’s beach. Sweet! 😁 It is safe to say it is in every kiteboarders dream to live somewhere where he/she could just jump out of bed and launch the kite.

The first few days of our stay there were riddled by technical difficulties like leaky kite, someone taking my board – luckily if found its way back to me – and other miscellaneous inconveniences. Little did we know, it was going to get a bit worse. Maybe more than just a bit.

Saturday afternoon, I broke my leg kiteboarding.

Without going into too much detail, I did a jump and landed poorly. It can happen. It’s one eventuality that we’re aware of whenever we go out but for us, the benefits outweigh the risks.

Trip to the ER revealed that I had broken my tibia plateau (top of tibia) and I was admitted to the hospital for a few days whilst doctors deliberated whether to operate or not.

They decided against it, phew, on account of me being (fairly) young, physically fit and healthy, and it would heal better without their intervention but I was still sentenced to 6-12 week recovery minimum. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I was equipped with a fancy knee brace and crutches, ordered not to put any weight on the injured leg and daily injections of anticoagulants to ward off any blood clots. Happy days! (I hate needles btw)

A follow-up in two weeks at the same hospital bound us to the Gold Coast area so we decided to just stick around until further notice with corona virus travel restrictions looming just around the corner. 😷
