WEEK 6 – ALSTONVILE FARM, AND THE LAND OF THE FOIL KITERS

This week we decided to change the scenery a bit. Change is always good. We stayed at Alstonville Country Cottages (fancy word for farmstay) where they keep goats, ducks, horses, chickens, guinea pigs and two super friendly dogs. The girls fed the goats, chased the dogs and kept peeking under the hens in case they laid any eggs. We went to bed with cricket lullaby and it was just what we needed. The camp site is also unpowered, therefore it was a good exercise to test our off-the-grid capabilities.

During days we descended to the oceanside and explored the beaches – yes, change is good but no ocean is a no-go. The air that we breathe needs to contain a minimal level of salt. 😂

Unfortunately, Ballina and Byron bay area didn’t look good with wind this week so we moved further North to Kingscliff to be closer to Gold Coast area which has so many beaches to explore we might have to stay here for a month! Poor us. LOL!!! 🤣😂🤣

We were advised by fellow kiters to check out Currumbin beach. Have small kids? This is the go-to spot. Situated at the mouth of a river it offers everything and anything you might wish for. Shielded with massive breakwater wall it offers shallow water, flat water, little waves and bigger waves, fish chasing and other shenanigans. It is also a great kite beach in NE winds.

Whenever you’re kiting in a new spot it is always great to talk to local kiters. They know the area, they know the conditions, they know the hazards and they know the best spots. And one of the things we noticed was, that here at Gold Coast most of them switched to foil kiting. This area is not known for strong winds and they got fed up with standing on the beach with a twintip. It’s quite a sight to see so many foil kiters and some of them are really good. Jumps and tricks included. We haven’t tried foil yet but after spending a week on the beach and waiting for the wind to pick up, the thought of switching crossed our minds.

We heard the wind is going to pick up next week so we’re sticking around. Will move the camp to be closer to water for convenience sake. Will keep you posted. 😊
