WEEK 5 – SOUTH WEST ROCK

It’s still raining…

And it’s not looking to improve any time soon. We’re a bit over it although we’re doing our best to keep a positive attitude. Wind is low to non-existent so mum and dad can’t even take out our frustrations out on the water.

I love it how, just before you arrive, the hosts graciously warn you about potential hazards. In this case it was mozzies and we were advised to bring repellent. It is funny, how one brush with almost certain death makes you believe you now know how to deal with a potential danger. Once lived, twice the expert, right? We had a near death experience with ferocious mosquitoes in Old Bar and we courageously believed it couldn’t get any worse.

Most famous last words… LOL

NRMA’s park is superb. The Pirate Ship water park being the flagship – sorry about the pun – and other entertainment not falling too far behind, we had a great time. Save for crying from despair as the mosquitoes relentlessly sucked out blood. Repellent or not, didn’t matter.

In the attempt to elude the little bloodsuckers we went down to the nearby beach and….. holy cow! Found THE beach.

Trial Bay, South West Rock in NSW is part of Arakoon National Park and is one of the most picturesque beaches we have seen up until now. The bay curves up and looks towards NorthWest – rather unique feature; almost half is shallow - waist deep in the worst-case scenario and the breakwater to the East subdues the big swell coming from the ocean. The caravan park sits underneath a historic Trial Bay Gaol that is worth a visit too. We broke camp at NRMA the next day and moved to the caravan park. We chose an unpowered site above the beach and relished the views for the next few days.

We had a blast. It would be up until now one of our favourite places we stayed at. The park offers facilities, so we didn’t want for anything, albeit we are self-sufficient with the caravan. We were constantly surrounded by kangaroos and a myriad of birds. The bay offers crystal clear, flat, shallow water and is frequented by dolphins. We were watching them every day, all day. They even came closer to us and the girls just buzzed with excitement. We spent our days snorkelling, chasing fish, bodyboarding on the small swell, we have a SUP and we paddled every day,… and on the last day, the wind came up. Cherry on the cake. We were the only kiters in the whole bay and it was bliss.
