WEEK 4 – PORT MACQUARIE AND SURVIVING WAVE KITE

During our time at Newcastle we learned that staying at showgrounds is a great money saving exercise. Quite often you’d be met with decent amenities, water and power connection on site and for half a price of regular campsites. We were recommended Wauchope Showgrounds, about 10 min drive out of Port Macquarie and decided to give it a go. We were not disappointed. We would highly recommend it to fellow travellers.

We arrived, unhitched and off we went. We often do that. ;D

South-Easter was up and we headed to a beach that was recommended by fellow kiter Loraine. Thanks again!!!! The beach had a low swell upon arrival and the girls had a blast with body boarding. Lana made a new friend. A dog this time. They were inseparable. One was burying the stones in the sand and the other was pawing them out again. It went on for hours. I’ll leave it to your guesses which one did what. LOL

The wind picked up and the locals arrived with their kites and seeing them we geared up as well. Monkey sees so monkey does but oh boy, we were not prepared for this!

All of the sudden, massive swell appeared and unaccustomed to this, we got washed, tumbled and churned. The twintip was mainly useless and we had a red-hot go with the directional but we were both washed back ashore. Sorry about the pun. Even the sorriest looking guy - not that there were any - appeared as an expert compared to us.

Seb had better luck with the twintip - against all odds - whilst I kept on getting caught in the barrel. Believe you me, there were plenty of profanities used. We learned that being hooked up to the kite is actually good in high wave as you can use it to get out of it. Just keep the kite at zenith if you can and pull down on the bar to “jump” out. And with the size of the swell that’s exactly what we did. We admitted our defeat and lack of expertise and promised to take the lessons as they are. Our bodies battered and bruised, sinuses rinsed, mistakes made but pride unscathed, live to fight and kite another day. We know we lack experience in ocean wave-kite and we understand now it’s a whole different ball game. Live and learn. We will try this again, by Gods, we will. And we’ll keep you posted. 😊

Moved the campsite to one of the Big4’s again. The girls were missing peer company. The NRMA’s South Rock has got a massive waterpark so we thought they could have some fun. It would break up the beach going entertainment for a while. Shame, it was raining again the whole time. Still, when you're in the water who cares, right?
