Another week, another victory. We’re still alive! Well, barely just. LOL. 🤣 But I’ll get to that in a minute.
We started this week in one of our favourite spots in NSW, Hawks Nest. We’ve written a report about it already and we rushed to get there as the wind was prognosed to be good. We came, unhitched and headed straight down to the beach. Finally some water time for mum and dad! And icing on the cake, it was Valentine’s day to boot. Nothing better for lovebirds than a good session. 😍
Turned out one of our kites had a leak so we had to deal with that too. Being so far away from the nearest kite shop forces you to think outside the box and – suck it up princess! – fix it yourself. It may not be the prettiest of fixes but as long as it holds… right?
In any case, two days later it was time to move on. This time we chased the wind to Old Bar. The shallow land and plenty of river channels, estuaries, aits and wide deltas opening to the ocean offer a plethora of kite spots, loads with flat water. The forecasted North-Easter was promising a good session so we headed towards Manning River South Channel Lagoon only to learn the channel has been closed for years and the water levels were just too low. We’d hang around as it was so picturesque and we bet the girls would have loved to stick around but we had priorities. When the wind is up, we chase it. Sorry girls. 😂😂😂
We ended up going to Manning Point Beach, only accessible by 4WD drive. You’re met with a sign at the entry telling you to deflate your tyres and that’s exactly what we did. Felt so good to drive on the beach!!!! Wahooo!!!! ⛱🚙
We drove to the Manning Point peninsula where I cut my teeth on the wave-kite on the ocean side. There was just enough wind for me on the 12m kite, but not enough for Seb. Poor soul, he was really itching to have a session but this is the name of game with the wind. You never know what you’re going to get. At least one of us had a good session. I never kited on waves before and luckily this spot offered small swell, great for beginners in this department like us.
We loved Old Bar, save for the mozzies. 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟
I kid you not! Christ on a stick!!!! They were ferocious!!!! 😲😲😲 Apparently, the bushfires and the abundant rain that followed created small little puddles everywhere thus perfect breeding ground for these little buggers. We dipped ourselves in repellent and by the looks of it they thought it was dressing. They nearly ate us alive! 🍽 They even went after me and I’m typically the one they leave alone. We up and skedaddled to Wauchope, just outside of Port Macquarie with the promise on another SE winds day. Fingers crossed!!! 🤞
