Cooktown is one small town with big history. We just had to tap into that. We visited the local museum and we cannot praise it enough. Definitely worth a visit.
Another great thing to see is the lookout. You can either walk, short but my-oh-my is it steep, or drive. I love walking but climbing,… maybe not so much. Not apologising, just stating a fact.
So we drove up and were rewarded with amazing views of the town, river and the ocean. I would highly recommend to check out this lookout as it also explains a little bit more why Captain Cook chose this spot to land.
We were impressed by amazing public splash park and local playgrounds. The girls had a blast.
Cooktown is also a major strategic point for travellers who are planning to go to Cape York or head across towards Northern Territories. We saw many dirty (and happy) robust 4WD, covered with red dust and mud. We never planned to go all the way to the tip but had Elim Beach on our agenda. We stocked up and off we went. North, always North. For now at least.
