We don’t typically do “touristy things”. Sounds so yuppy when we say it but it is true. We prefer to stay off the beaten track as more often than not, that’s where treasures lie. We heard about Whitsundays Islands – who hasn’t, right? – and we decided to take a closer look.
I think Whitsundays is one of those places in Australia, that you just have to have on your bucket list. Like Uluru, or Frazer Island, or Margaret River or Great Ocean Road, or so many other stunning places Australia has to offer.
Whitsundays was on our list, we booked a guided trip – not a cheap thing for a family of four but that’s how the cookie crumbles - and off we went. The day was nice and sunny, albeit quite windy. We thought about bringing our kite gear with us but then thought better of it.
The tour entailed a boat ride to the island, a snorkelling adventure, the walk to the lookout over the swirling white sands, and a leisure time on the beach. Meals included. Some pictures on the brochure were indeed painted with a marketing brush but the rest of the trip delivered.
My favourite spot was the lookout. It is as jawdropping as the pictures promise and I swear I could stay there for hours and just enjoy the view. We saw stingrays and sharks, meandering sands and turquoise water, shimmering in the sun.
At that point, we regretted not bringing our kite gear with us, but we wouldn’t have had time to use it anyway. However, bucket list got another entry. Kitesurfing in the swirls of Whitsundays.
All in all, what a fantastic day we had!
