Umina Beach

luckaslatner

This picturesque beach is more famous for wave riding than is for kitesurfing. We still love what it has to offer though. Allow us to be a little bit partial to the background of the setting more than the beach itself.

We stayed at NRMA’s Big 4 Ocean Beach Holiday Resort campsite for the first week of our travels. We chose this site as it has many attractions for the kids, from swimming pools to skate parks. Not a dull moment in sight all the whilst the parents can have a little bit of a time-off.

When it comes to the beach, it offers a small kite spot at the Western tip; there is another kite spot in the area however that is only accessible by boat. Maybe something to investigate next time.

Umina beach offers many attractions for the kids. Swell that is perfect for surfing but then not too great to be overly hazardous (at least from what we’ve witnessed and we’ve seen some massive swell in the past). We believe teen kids would have a blast. Body boarding for smaller kids would also be a great fun time as the beach offers a shallow slope. There’s even a surf club and lessons for those who are interested. As for the kite. Luck will have it the conditions were not ideal – or non-existent – for the time we spent there as you’d need SSE winds and nothing else will do. The coastline is undulating and forms massive ridges that create insane turbulence, experienced first-hand. As an example, this morning the wind was blowing 12kns with the gusts of 22kns from God-knows-where direction.

We wish we could have tested this beach as we hear a lot of people kite in this spot, however from what we’ve seen it might be quite restricted when it comes to good conditions.

On the last but not least note, we would like to give a massive shout out to the manager of the Ocean Beach Resort who generously offered a refund for the two days that we spent in the deluged campsite.

We are Windchasers, a kiteboarding family who travel around Australia to find new and exciting kite spots, we have two small kids that we like take to the beach with us. Juggling kite and family can sometimes be quite challenging so this is us reporting what we find and how good it was for both kids and us.
