TRIAL BAY – LAGGERS POINT (a.k.a. The Beauty Spot)

We stayed at Alkoon National Park, at South West Rock in Central Coast NSW. About 5 hrs drive North from Sydney. The place where we camped was overlooking Trial Bay, a historic site with a Gaol on the ridge above it. The bay is rather unique in its shape and orientation as it curves up and in on the East side. A grain of history told us that the bay was once a favoured mooring site but got hammered by Easterly winds so the Gaol prisoners built the breakwater and part of it serves to this day. We have them to thank for the flat water throughout the bay.

The bay is quite big. Measuring approximately 1.5km across (East to West) and as said before the Eastern tip curves up and in, added breakwater created a shielded little beach called Laggers Point. Great spot to pump up your kite. And you don’t have to be a patron of the campgrounds as there is a road leading to a boat ramp that is accessible to public. This beach works great in NW through to NE winds and as far as we could tell, no hazards to be wary of. The only thing is that the size of the launch beach is tide dependant and on top of that it’s tucked behind the breakwater wall thus you need to walk out to the water to get back into the wind. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to stay upwind in NE as there would be a leeway wind shadow under the Gaol hill.

On that day we were graced with 22kns, NE wind and being the only kiters around allowed us to take the full advantage of the bay. It was glorious.

The bay has crystal clear water and is frequented by dolphins. We were seeing pods every day. Lana started calling the place The Beauty Spot and the name kinda stuck with us. Knee deep water at Laggers Point is perfect for kids. Just above it, the small swell develops, and body boarding/surfing was the rave. The girls didn’t stop for hours and to boot, dolphins came by to say hi. Additional feature of this little beach is the breakwater wall, where kids can take refuge when they’ve had enough of the wind.

I could go on and on raving about the fantabulousness of this beach and I still couldn’t do it justice. You just have to see for yourself. We’ll be back for sure.
