RUNAWAY BAY – SHEARWATER AND ANGLERS ESPLANADE

With the current situation with the travel restrictions, we’re forced to hit pause on our journey and beach reports. So, these will be one of our last beach reports.

Runaway Bay is a suburb in Gold Coast, QLD. The whole area is interlaced with river canals and estuaries. The beaches we’ll be addressing today are adjacent to each other and offer similar conditions so we thought we could bundle them up. They’re called Shearwater and Anglers Esplanade.

They both stretch North->South along the river canal, fenced by South Stradbroke Island. This produces flat water and work best on in S-SE winds. The strength of the wind is affected by the tide, therefore the wind metres should be taken with some allowance. Also, be mindful of the river traffic. This is a river canal and there’s plenty of it.

As they are banked onto the park, there is always plenty of room to pump up, although there are some trees in the vicinity that would be best to stay away from. The other hazard that we know of – but luckily haven’t experienced – are the dead zones. The terrain that surrounds the area can create some wind shadows so be careful to stay upwind. Best to talk to a local kiter before venturing out. They’re always there when the wind is up they’re a wealth of info. We've been told that wearing booties is not a bad idea either. Stepping on a sharp shell might put a dent in your mood.

Riverside beaches are as always teeming with life, so the girls relentlessly chased the soldier crabs. The river was nice to cool off too, but they eek-ed at the seagrass. In any case, there was plenty of sand to build sandcastles from and a shower nearby where we could rinse them off before getting them into the car again. A small added bonus were the shrubs at the green, that provided wind shelter when they got tired of it. Nice spot for a picnic.

Overall they’re great beaches for beginners and advanced riders alike. Hope we can see you there soon. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy. Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/RDVADWJFwhTf69cLA https://goo.gl/maps/jrh3WgqBRDcRmqZj7
