LUCINDA BEACH; FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND

Lucinda is a small town of 400 people in Far North Queensland, opposite the south tip of Hinchingbrook Island, famous for sugar exporting, great fishing (I hear) and it is one of the lesser known kite destinations.

The ginormous tidal plateau just south of the sugar transport jetty is the biggest kite spot we have ever seen (so far). It welcomes anything from South and East winds and best during high and outgoing tide, the latter will flatten the swell to next to zero. The basin is waist deep throughout and so ideal for beginners, however be wary of the outgoing tide as the water disappears quite quickly. We couldn’t see any other hazards. I did step on a flathead, or two, but stingrays would also be present.

The locals did say there could be crocs but they personally haven’t seen any in decades. Not to be dismissed though! Welcome to Far North Queensland! 😊

The beach is long but thin and not offering much setup space. There is a park with playground and amenities nearby and plenty of parking space.

The girls had a ball with the trainer kite and constructing something out of the driftwood branches. It looked advanced engineering to me. LOL.

Overall, fantastic spot, plenty of space and great for kids. Thumbs up from us.
