Happy Valley, Caloundra QLD

Happy Valley is a really good spot for kiting, right in the middle of Caloundra, QLD. It sits next to the park, where you can throw yourself a picnic or chill after a session. There is a fabulous playground for the kids, a café and amenities nearby, so on a good day you can make it a family outing. Thumbs up from us!

There isn’t much room for setting up on the beach (sand) but some patches of grass will do, however take care when launching. Keep the beachgoers in mind as well as the rocks and oyster shells stuck to them.

This area is best during outgoing tide and in S/E/SE winds. The NorthEasters are no good.

Now, let’s talk about the hazards.

If you are not a very confident kiter, avoid kiting there around the high tide as there will be swell. Low tide would be easier as you can stand most of the way. There is also the issue of the shifting sandbanks. Do not trust that the same shallows that you saw on day one, will be there on day two. Keep your eyes peeled.

Also to keep in mind, there is no landing on the Bribie Island National Park during nesting season.

Now to the biggest one of them all. DON’T LOSE YOUR BOARD! Strong tidal currents may wash your board offshore. We’ve witnessed the flow and it looks like a river and with onshore winds and outgoing tide you might not catch up with it. Many boards have floated away from their owners forever. RIP

All in all, great beach. Like said, thumbs up from us.
