HALIDAY BAY AND ‘YEAH,NAH’– Week #39

Updated: Nov 29, 2020

Someone gave us a hint, as friendly fellow travellers do, about this little beach called Haliday. We took his word about not being disappointed and didn’t do much investigating. Called the park and booked a few nights stay. I just love the surprises like this. If you don’t exactly know what you’re getting you get that exciting feeling as you’re driving up to the spot. And we did. We even felt a bit giddy. Totally un-grown up, isn’t it?

Haliday Beach is cute and small, however doesn’t lag behind in beauty and charm. There were a few more surprises for us down the line too. The lot was overlooking the bay so we could sip our morning coffee and watch the fiery colours of the sunrise from the bedroom. Win! 🌅 Turtles! Heaps of turtles all the time! There is a rock outcrop on the left-hand side of the bay that is apparently abundant in seaweed thus attracting turtles. We even got a closer glimpse when we were paddling around with our SUP. Fishing! I’m the type of person who couldn’t catch a fish if it was swimming in a bucket. Well, fishing gods smiled upon us here. Almost every cast – again, this is not my sport and I’m lucky if the hook lands in the water – was biting and we even caught a few fish! Too small for anything so we let them go but still! Unbelievable! 😄🐟🎣 The bay is too small for kiting and so we had a few outings to explore the conditions on the adjacent beaches. We checked Seaforth first and although the bay is absolutely humongous and looked promising, we asked the locals about the presence of crocs as anyone dragging themselves through water should. Common sense really. 💁‍♀️ One of my favourite quirks in Aussie language would be the ‘yeah, nah’ and ‘nah, yeah’ answers that are confusing to everyone but us Aussies. The trick is to listen to the second word whilst the first one is there to soften the blow. 😆😆 And we’ve learned a little trick. The ‘yeah, nah’ (or its counterpart) have a tone of voice that you need to pay attention to. For instance, if it sounds more like elongated ‘yeeeeeeah, nah’ your chances are about 50/50. We deducted that we don’t like those odds for kiting at Seaforth then.🧏‍♂️🧏‍♀️😆 We did check the Cape Hillsborough too. Shame it wasn’t windy enough so we left it for next time. 😊
