Elliott Heads Beach

luckaslatner

We shouldn’t tell you about this place… but we will. You’re welcome! 😊

It is off the beaten tracks and a secret well kept. We heard about it through the grape vine and decided we MUST check it out. Have to say, it has become one of our personal favourites.

The North Head of Elliott Heads is where the settlement, caravan park and the parking spots are. There are playgrounds, amenities and a nearby café – we haven’t tried it so no guarantees there – to cover your basic needs.

The mouth of the river and surrounds create four distinct areas where you can kite. Yes, four! The lagoon, the riverside, the south bay and the front beach. All four can be used in any wind that comes from East and/or from North to South. We don’t want to get into the grit of the details, but once you’re there it’s easy to get your head around it. So, in a nutshell….

The front beach faces the ocean and is great for wave and carve kiters. Great in NE or SE winds, stay away from the rocks on the North side as there is no landing area past this point.

The river is a good option in either NE, E and SE winds, take care not to go too far behind the south head as you’ll get cut off the wind.

Just exiting the river to the south is the bay. Super useful spot for when other spots are inconvenient or such and it best catered for in the south winds. Bit of chop, as could be expected, but still a great spot.

Now, to the prize winner. The lagoon.

The lagoon offers smooth water, knee deep, heaven for kiters all around. Used in SE, E and NE winds however it only exists during high tide. There is hope though. One can kite in the riverside (or anywhere else you like) until the lagoon fills up.

And when it does, all the boys and girls come out to play. You can expect it to be a bit crowded.

The only other hazard we spotted was the abundance of marine life. I stepped on at least three stingrays, and we bet there are other critters lurking in the muddy sandbanks. Also, stay away from the Island during bird nesting season.

Kids? Kids loved it with the capital L. This spot offered us a great opportunity to kite with our girls in tandem or in tow. See the links to the adventures here.

Our girls now ushering us to go to the beach whenever it is windy. LOL! “Yeah kitesurfing!”

We are Windchasers, a kiteboarding family who travel around Australia to find new and exciting kite spots, we have two small kids that we like take to the beach with us. Juggling kite and family can sometimes be quite challenging so this is us reporting what we find and how good it was for both kids and us.
