BROADWATER BEACH - GOLD COAST

Gold Coast is peppered with awesome kite spots. This far we've seen Currumbin, Shearwater, Anglers, Broadwater and Len Fox Park (also known as KFC to the locals) and I bet there's many more to choose from. All in all, awesome spots that can cater for different wind conditions as much as various kiteboarding/surfing/foiling expertise levels. I mean, these guys have it all.

So, this time I wanted to talk about one of my favourite spots in GC, Broadwater.

This beach is good in SE winds and it's good to check the tide conditions to make the most out of it. North winds would be onshore, however the tacks would take you to a high traffic area and we figured it just wouldn't be as fun. Besides, there's a windsurfing community that already claimed that spot for themselves. Gets crowded.

This spot technically belongs to Broadwater Tourist Park so it's easier if you're a patron but for us it worked out well - given that we're travelling. We camped 50m from the beach and had all the facilities and commodities at hand.

The beach is another one of those that stretch along the canal and offers similar conditions as it does hazards. To rehash, expect high volumes of river traffic, the water is murky and shallow for the most part thus hard to assess the depth so be wary when you do those jumps. The few deeper areas are marked for boats, plenty of them to be seen, and the tidal effect in the area is hard felt. Icing on the cake is that you can expect vibrant marine life. Sharks, dolphins, stingrays, turtles, to name a few. Wearing booties is also advised due to some sharp shells lurking in the mucky sand.

The sandy part of the beach access is small however there is a large grass area where you can set up and launch. Since we were one of the few kiteboarding guests of the Park, we had the beach pretty much to ourselves.

There is a deep area just as you enter the water but it gets ridiculously shallow further out so be careful not to hit the bottom. And keep an eye on the tides!

Our kids were quite happy there, chasing the soldier crabs and such, although they didn't want to swim as they didn't like the murky water, squishy sand and seagrass - their words, not mine. However, since we were staying at the Park, we could have the girls at the caravan with one of the parents whilst the other had a session, and then swap.

There is another beach just nearby, the so-called KFC and is accessible from the road and quite popular. What we noticed was that the beach was very shallow at the launch site but had a wider deep area. It was also crowded for the most part. Still, we saw some skill there and it was quite a sight. Worth checking out.

P.s. Yes, this is the same spot where I broke my leg but I still vote it to be one of my favourites in GC area. 😃🤘
