WEEK #32 - Archer Point

luckaslatner

Back to Cooktown. We never planned to go past Elim Beach and Kite Surfari, so we turned back South. Restock and regroup and figure out our next step. We heard about the free camp south of Cooktown that is supposed to be good for kiting as well. And it was…

Archer Point is a gorgeous little spot, popular with both outside visitors and locals thus it can get crowded quite quickly. Whilst we were there the camping right next to the beach was still allowed but soon after, the custodians closed it off for dune restoration. It still accepts day visitors but no more overnight stays. Lucky us, we made it just in time.

So, lucky we were, we could camp right next to the water. We parked our caravan so we could see the lagoon from our bedroom. We woke up to the sounds of the wind and waves, and sipped our morning coffee watching the bay.

The wind forecast was promising so we spared no thought and pumped up our kites… For the next few days it was all about kitesurfing. Morning, noon and evening. The high winds attracted local kitesurfers and the skill show began. It was such a sight. Tricks, high jumps, crashes, laughs, cold beers after the sessions. Feast for the eyes and soul.

As mentioned before, this spot is popular with travellers and locals alike, thus the local kids are used to kitesurfers and were standing in the water, yelling for high jumps and high-fiving us on the splash. Too cool!

The girls had plenty of company and together they chased crabs and fish and every evening the girls fell to their beds exhausted from adventures.

When we were there we were devastated to see so much plastic pollution on this beach. Our girls and other visitors went out every afternoon and picked up a bucket full of plastic rubbish. We encourage you to do the same on every beach you go to. TAKE 3 FOR THE SEA!

We lived the dream.
