4 MILE BEACH – PORT DOUGLAS, QLD

Four Mile Beach is yet another beach in Queensland that boasts with shallow water and smooth surface during outgoing tide. Lucky Queenslanders!

It is part of Port Douglas and is facing the ocean, however due to its orientation and other conditions, big swell seldom develops. During outgoing tide you get a large flat water area and gentle swell further out.

The small park at the back provides ample parking, amenities and even a small playground. Thumbs up from us kite parents.

For those seeking to get into the sport, there is a nearby kite school you could get in touch with for lessons. No royalties here, just practical finger pointing.

Great beach for E and ESE winds during winter season, lots of setup space, the only thing to be vary of is a small reef area to the South. It’ll pop up during low tide but can be treacherously concealed during high tide. Another thing to keep in mind is that during Southerly winds, a turbulence likes to develop around the tip of the beach, causing fickly launching and landing.

Be forewarned, not entire beach is kiteable. The North area is no-kite zone, see the map and talk to locals – as one always should when coming to a new beach. Since this is Queensland, it is always good to be aware of potential croc and stingers (jellyfish).

Overall, great kiting spot.
